All in the Family is an American situation comedy that was originally broadcast on the CBS television network from January 12, 1971 to April 8, 1979. In September 1979, the show was revamped, and given a new title, Archie Bunker's Place. This version of the sitcom lasted another four years, ending its run in 1983.

Produced by Norman Lear and based on the British television series Till Death Us Do Part, the show broke ground in its depiction of issues previously considered unsuitable for U.S. network television comedy, such as racism, homosexuality, women's liberation, rape, miscarriage, breast cancer, menopause and impotence.

The show ranked #1 in the yearly Nielsen ratings from 1971 to 1976. As of 2008, The Cosby Show has been the only other show to top the ratings for at least five consecutive seasons. TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time ranked All in the Family as #4. Bravo also named the show's protagonist, Archie Bunker, TV's greatest character of all time.

Veteran character actor Carroll O'Connor starred as Archie Bunker, a working-class, very outspoken bigot, prejudiced against everyone and everything not in agreement with his view of the world. His ignorance and stubbornness tend to cause his malapropism-filled arguments to self-destruct. He often responds to uncomfortable truths by blowing a raspberry. He longs for simpler times, when people sharing his viewpoint were in charge, as evidenced by the nostalgic theme song, "Those Were the Days," the show's original title. (In the first pilot filmed, the family name was Justice rather than Bunker).

By contrast, his wife Edith (Jean Stapleton) is a sweet, understanding, if somewhat dense woman. She usually defers to her husband, but on the rare occasions when she takes a stand, she proves to be one of the wisest characters. This is perhaps best seen in episodes "The Battle of the Month" and "The Games Bunkers Play". Archie often tells her to "stifle" herself and calls her a "dingbat", but despite their very different personalities, they love each other deeply.

An American sitcom, ‘All in the family’, produced by Norman Lear, is the most popular TV shows in the history of the television. It ran from 12th January, 1971 to 8th April, 1979 on CBS television network. The sitcom has been on #1 in yearly Neilson ratings throughout for 5 years that is from 1971 to 1976. Up till now, American Idol has been ranked # 1 TV show which continuously remain on top for 5 consecutive years, others being The Cosby Show and All in the family. TV Guide’s 50 greatest TV shows of all the time has placed the sitcom as number 4.

The show was so popular that it broke all the previous concepts and views about many untallied topics such as racial discrimination, homosexuality, rape, miscarriage, abortion, women’s freedom, breast melanoma, Vietnam War, menopause and inabilities. Due to its magnificent success, the show was refurbished and was continued with a different name, Archie Bunker’s Place. This do up of the sitcom lasted another 4 year span of the time. The main cast of ‘All in the family’ includes Carroll O’Connor as Archie Bunker, Jean Stapleton as Edith being Archie’s wife, Sally Struthers playing Archie’s daughter role as Gloria and her husband Michael Stivic played by Rob Reiner. Archie Bunker has been awarded as the TV’s greatest character of all time.

Archie Bunker is the main character of the show. He is a racist, heterosexual, and a conformist in religion and politics. He is always rude and curt to those who disagree with him. He is blunt and forthright to non US born persons. He is always blaming the modern times and remembering the old ones when everybody used to have the same views like Archie’s. This melancholy behavior is also depicted in the theme music of the drama as well. Edith is Archie’s wife who is green and differs from her husband in his views. Though they are two poles apart but the couple is in love with each other deeply. Gloria, Archie’s daughter, is married to Michael. Michael or Mike is an opposite character to Archie. He is a hip hop going person. Archie always has a collision with Mike over Religious, political and other issues of life.
